A new affordable housing scheme has finally arrived in Manchester:

Manchester recently was allocated a large amount of money to focus on creating affordable homes for people who want to live in and around the city. Due to this being passed, 56 new and high quality homes are set to be built across a number of small sites that have previously been used for housing in Higher Brackley, Moston and Collyhurst by March 2018.

Manchester recently was allocated a large amount of money to focus on creating affordable homes for people who want to live in and around the city. Due to this being passed, 56 new and high quality homes are set to be built across a number of small sites that have previously been used for housing in Higher Brackley, Moston and Collyhurst by March 2018.

The developments are subject to the passing of planning permissions and will contain 2-bedroom homes and 2-bedroom bungalows. They will both be available at affordable rent and will be managed by Northwards Housing. The creation of new bungalows and smaller houses will allow more larger homes for families who are already on the waiting list to be made available.

The developments come as a part of a new partnership between Manchester City Council and Northwards Housing who will use the funding from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) through its Affordable Homes Programme. A new contractor for the ambitious project will be chosen in the next few weeks before the planning applications are submitted for the sites in Spring. If planning is approved and granted, construction can begin in the Summer.

The Council have placed a definition on what they believe “affordable” housing is. They define it as a policy that will ensure up to 2,000 homes are affordable are being built each year and are made accessible to those who earn less than the cities average household income.

Councillor Bernard Priest, the Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, has said that, “It is important that we can replace properties lost to Right to Buy and demolition to maintain the level of homes available. This programme will allow us to offer residents a genuinely affordable housing choice, while making the best use of development land available to us.”

Sue Abbott, chair of the board at Northwards Housing, added that, “At a time when demand is so high for affordable, quality accommodation, we are pleased to be part of this new development in North Manchester. Northwards looks forward to the completion of the homes and to supporting the families who will live in them.”
